Yousuke, Nanami and Kouta
Curiously, this group is very tied together. Our intrepid trio met in the Hayate school, recruited for their promise as future ninja. They became fast friends when they fell behind their peers this due to, on one occasion, the boys staying to help Nanami who was injured in a climb. But that was not the only thing, obviously. All three were frivolous, playful, happy-go-lucky. Though they DID want to be ninja, they were not particularly focused as they should have been. Thus they were the only ones left out of the annual contest. Thus they were not around when everyone else was taken and killed. Yousuke Shiina, Hurricane Red, remained virtually history-less. A good, if often silly soul, he works for an odd-jobs company. His boss is the extremely focused, tempermental Kanae Tsukumo. Nanami Nono also never got a history, and she is also good though often silly. She was picked up by a talent scout, Mister Futoshi Hase, to sing traditional music, and he does his level best to promote her despite her vanishing acts.
Kouta Bitou was the only one both with history and family we met. His grandmother, Ayame Bitou died when he was four. She did not leave him, though. Instead, her spirit remained and watched over him until Satorakura's Vampa Iyarn accidently brought her to life in a teenage body. Kouta also has a little sister, the lovely Meiko. Their parents were killed in a car crash when they were very young and they grew up in an orphanage. While he will be a silly soul often, he tends to hold himself responsible for others (such as Meiko, who was injured and needed physical therapy from an accident Kouta blamed himself for). This led to him going to work as a physical therapist, and he loves working with kids most of all.
Their mecha are, respectively, Hurricane Hawk which flies at Mach 10. Hurricane Leon, with a wind-generating turbine ring around its neck. Hurricane Dolphin, whose Ring allows it to fly.
During the Nara Era (end of 7th to 8th Century) some people could use special powers hidden in nature. (levitation, teleportation etc). By the Kamakura Era (13th Century), how to use these powers had become systemized. Two great schools had become the major players in the secret society. In 1495, during the Muromachi Era, The Ύ¬ (fast wind) Hayate and v¬ (fast thunder) Ikazuchi Way Schools had a competition presided over by the Emperor of Japan. Hayate School won and became the leading school of Ninja. From that point on into the Sengoku Era (warring period) they continued to compete and improve their techniques... against each other. During the Edo period the best of the Hayate Ninja were chosen to be Hurricanger. It's said they first appeared during the early 19th Century. The year 2002, when the two schools were ready for their annual competition as they'd done for five hundred and seven years...
Additional information provided by my student the professor: The man they are fighting in the last picture is a Yamabushi. R, out of history and known to function as spies, and she thinks we'd be very interested in his history. I want to know why there's a giant spider and frog behind him! And Miko provided some answers!

The Frog/Toad in Ninja legend:
This is probably based on the legendary Ninja Warrior Jeraiya whose spiritual
Ninjitsu "advisor" was the toad...
"Jiraiya the ninja warrior Ogata Shuuma Hiroyuki was originaly from a powerful
and rich family, but his house fell and he had to go into hidding. He disguised
himself as Tarou, a peasant in order to survive. When he was an adult he set
out to avenge his family and clan. He eventually became the legendary bandit
"Jiraiya" who was taught the magic of the toad."

The Spider in Ninja legend:
Spiders and Scorpions were mostly used as deadly poisons for the enemy. It also
can be a refrence to the legendary Minamoto Yoshimitsu, who it is said to have
devised many new methods of restraining a prisoner by observing the action of a
spider weaving a web about its prey.
